A Tiny Home?

According to a survey about Tiny  Homes done by the National Association of Home Builders more than half of Americans would consider living in a home that’s less than 600 square feet. Among Millennials, interest increases to 63%.

The figures are pretty amazing, but what caught my eye was the survey’s definition of a tiny home: less than 600 square feet!

That surprised me, because our cabin is less than 600 square feet.

According to our information, square footage in a home only counts if a normal sized person can stand up under the roof. Our upstairs room only allows me to stand straight right under the roof beam; the roof slopes quickly to just a few feet of wall on either side. That disallows us to include most of the second floor in our square footage figure.

Sure, the cabin feels small often enough. Yes, we  sometimes fantasize about extra space. But, I wouldn’t consider it a Tiny House. When I think of that term, I think of homes like the one pictured above, or the ones that are on wheels, and can be towed from place to place.

While I may often refer to our cabin as “tiny,” I wouldn’t consider it a “Tiny Home.”

Interestingly, in speaking to one of the two Air B’n’B hosts we actually met on the Ireland trip, I mentioned that the house they rented us was far bigger than ours. He said, “Yes, I hear that tiny homes have become very popular in the U.S.!” I assured him that we live like very few other Americans! Maybe not, though?

Ironically, we’re very interested in the Tiny Home Movement. Aly, in particular, has taken an interest in it, often speculating on where, on the property, she might build a tiny home. We may one day build what we consider a tiny home, but, at least according to the National Association of Homebuilders, we already live in one!
