The
Zeiger Family Homestead
In Autumn
(August 1 - October 31)
Autumn is harvest time. The garden is winding down, although cold weather greens such as spinach and kale survive late in the season thanks to cold frames. We pick berries on the mountain sides for jams and jellies. It's hunting season, and the salmon runs continue. We also scout for and mark deadfall trees to be cut for firewood as the weather turns cooler, as we will continue to do through the winter.
This is a bittersweet time, one of our favorites. Summer is dying, the leaves are turning. Heavier rains top off our water system, but many days are clear and bracingly crisp. Halloween is on its way, the last event of the season.
